Fandom and Neomedia Studies

Origins

The Fandom and Neomedia Studies (FANS) Association began when it was realized that there was then no successful dual-interest conference and/or journal that allowed for the full intersection of fandom and academic interests. We hosted our first event in June 2013. Since that time, we have grown considerably, adding a second journal and hosting several events in Japan in addition to our home in the DFW Metroplex. To date, we have had presenters and authors from 37 US states, the District of Columbia, and 21 other countries.

As we were setting up our organization, it was decided that, with the help of our sponsor, Phoenix Entertainment, all our publications would be open access. We have never charged and will never charge any fee for article submission, publication, or reading. It is our firm belief that open access journals are the best way to share the type of information covered in our journals. We also adhere to a strict double blind peer review process, believing this to be the best policy. Authors retain all copyright and rights relating to their respective articles. Also, to assist in research and citation of our authors’ work, all items will be assigned a DOI beginning with the 4.1 edition in August 2018 with OSF’s SocArxiv. Once this edition is published, FANS will work backward to have DOIs assigned to all previously published items.
