The iCLA and FANS Japan are pleased to announce their first conference and publication for the Japan arm of its open access, peer-reviewed journal of fandom and neomedia studies, The Phoenix Papers. The projected publication date for the proceedings of this event (both presentations and other papers) is August 2017. Items submitted after 1 May 2017 will be considered for inclusion in the next cycle, beginning November 2017.

Though the focus of this year’s inaugural event is cosplay, fandom for us includes all aspects of being a fan, ranging from being a passive audience member to producing one’s own parafictive or interfictive creations. Neomedia includes both new media as it is customarily defined as well as new ways of using and conceptualizing traditional media.

FANS and FANS branch groups will never charge any fee to publish in our journals or to read our publications. Our sole concern is quality research and scholarship in fandom and neomedia studies. Our mission is to encourage, assist, and publish research into FANS fields of study.
