Call for Panelists: Pop Culture Parenting

We are pleased to announce a call for panelists for a shared presentation entitled “Pop Culture Parenting.” The focus will be on the elements of popular culture that may alternately be of concern or used as enlightening for children or student viewers. We would like to invite two panelists to join us in Dallas, Texas, on 6 June 2015. At present there are two panel members:

  • Michael Vandehey, PhD, Professor of Psychology, Midwestern State University, specializing in child and developmental psychology
  • J. Holder Bennett, MA, Associate Professor of History, Collin College, specializing in popular culture as a teaching tool

Presenters may come from any field with an interest in popular culture and media and how it affects modern youth and/or how parents or educators can respond to the needs of youth regarding popular culture and media. Individual presentations would ideally be 10 – 15 minutes in length.

This panel is sponsored by the Fandom and Neomedia Studies (FANS) Association and will take place at A-Kon, one of the longest-running popular culture conventions in the United States. Registration is not required and panelists will receive a free membership to A-Kon. Presenters may use this membership to study fans, in some cases spanning three generations in attendance, in their native environment as they express and learn about their various fandoms.

To apply as a panelist, please submit a CV and presentation prospectus to FANSConference@gmail.com by 30 April for consideration. The event is to be held at the Hilton Anatole Hotel in Dallas, TX, on Saturday 6 June 2015 beginning at 8:45pm.
